I had the privilege to learn about international development from Peter. He definitely inspired me to take up a career and conduct research in this area. I’m still grateful for Peter’s theoretical insights into the subject and his generosity to include me in some deep conversations about the area. Peter, I wish you well on your next journey and thank you for your insights and inspirations.
Peter and I shared so much over the years. I live in the Melbourne suburb of Balaclava where Peter grew up. Most recently we both had properties at Cape Bridgewater near Portland, an area that we loved. When Peter was growing up Balaclava was a poor, working-class area, a far cry from what it is like today. I knew his mother and father who lived just up the street from me. Peter was unusual for a worki-class lad in that his insatiable curiosity for the world of ideas led him to pursue education as a calling, though somewhat later in life than is common. He was a high achiever and went on to be awarded an Honours degree and a PhD. An academic career followed and I had the good fortune to work with Peter over the years at both Monash and RMIT universities. The breadth of his scholarship was legendary and he produced a number of publications, some of which we co-authored. He was an outstanding lecturer and inspired a generation of young undergraduate and postgraduate students. He will be sorely missed.
